To me, starting and running your own business, and breaking free from the 9 to 5 grind, is the ultimate ambition to have. It gives you freedom to live life on your terms. No more getting up to work for someone else. No more clocking in and out and doing something you only do because it pays the bills.
From an early age, we’re taught how to work for other people, but rarely how to build something for ourselves.
I don't know about you, but I'm sick of just getting by and then using the small window of time we have at weekends to do the things we actually want to do, dreading every Monday when the fun is over! There's a reason we get that "Friday Feeling".
That's why I created The Proper Hustle—to show you that there is another way, if like me you want that! It's to run your own business and reclaim your freedom, and this website aims to help you earn money from something you are truly passionate about.
I have been where you are now, sat thinking of ideas to make money on the side, never really coming up with anything I thought would work, until I started taking action, until the day I decided to step off the conveyor belt and take a leap of faith.
Start With What You Know
I always think you should start with something you know or are passionate about. A hobby you have that chills you out. Something you like doing that people praise you for, or an idea you had when looking at how other people do things, and thinking I could do a much better job than them!
It might be a craft you have been perfecting such as sewing or baking, it might be something you fancy giving a go like 3d printing or laser engraving. It could just be as simple as walking other peoples dogs, or selling well known products but what ever it is you just need to start!
"If it was that easy everyone would be doing it" is a myth! It's very easy, bake some cakes and book a pop up market stall on a Saturday morning, you will soon find out whether or not it's a good idea. And what have you risked? £100.00 or less to find out.
You Already Have the Skills to Succeed
I'm guessing most of you have held down a job at some point? You have been trained to do everything you know, and no doubt it was scary at first, there were pressures, but you over-came them and you perfected what you need to and became competent.
Starting your own business really is no different, only this time you have to figure it out for yourself. How? Get online! There has never been a better time to learn just about anything you need to.
Between YouTube, Audiobooks, Podcasts and a wealth of other online information and courses, you can turn your hand to pretty much anything you have the will to learn.
Take responsibility for your own progress, go and speak to other business owners, join communities of people just like you on Facebook, attend business courses all of this will help you on your way.
Check out my Skills Library too it contains some excellent videos from technical skills to business skills. I will be updating it constantly, and please feel free to send me your suggestions.

Test Your Ideas Out
Lock yourself away and work on your idea! Once you have something, show it to people, get some feedback.
It really doesn't matter who at this stage just chat about it to anyone and everyone, you will soon find out what people think, and don't limit yourself to family members.
I would even say, talk to people who you know will be honest with you, if not brutally so! When Starting Shelleys Waxmelts, we tested them out on some of the most critical people we could find, and we didn't stop improving them until everyone was happy. This step is probably the most valuable part of your journey.
It took us 7 months of development when making our wax melts, we tried so many different wax and scent oil combinations, and truth be known we almost gave up, but deep down we loved doing it and that got us over the line, that's why you need to do something you actually like doing or are passionate about!
"The only way to do great work is to love what you do" Steve Jobs
Don't skip this!, it's probably the hardest step of the entire journey, but if you take it seriously, your chance of success will increase massively. I'm speaking from experience, I'm sure my earlier business ventures would have been much more successful had I have concentrated on this step more!
IMPORTANT NOTE
Check your idea with your local trading standards office, they are extremely helpful and will tell you if there are any regulations you need to comply with first, do this before selling your first product. Do not skip this step, this is very important and is just one of many steps you can take to protect your business before and after it grows, and to make sure your business is fully compliant.
I'm not going to list the many regulations that exist, you need to take the time to find out and understand the ones relevant to your own business. To list them all risks you not doing that important work.
Stop overthinking it and take the first step
You will always have doubts and fears, but you need to trust your gut more. If the people around you are telling you it's a good idea and product, and you've done all your testing, eventually you are going to have to get out there into the world and do a test run on the general public!
IMPORTANT NOTE
First of all invest in public and product liability insurance, it's relatively inexpensive and should be the first thing you do before selling a single product.
Find out where your customers are, whether it be at your local market, or on Linkedin and set yourself up in that space.
With our waxmelt business it was a market stall, easy I thought, just turn up with your products and people will walk by, and I just needed to catch their attention.
With Goto workwear Ltd it was Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter, I created some business profiles and started messaging people and posting adverts about our service.
On Ebay I perfected my listings as much as I could, and made sure I messaged every single buyer after a sale was made. EBay did the marketing for me for a small selling fee of course!
The public will tell you if you have a good product, but you might have to ask some of them directly to find out what they really think. Make sure you take the time and put in the effort to talk to every single customer you have.
Remember when you first meet them don't know who you are. Tell them how much you have put into your product, let that passion come through. If you genuinely believe in your product and have taken the time to build that confidence, it will come through in conversation and people are much more likely to buy your product when you believe in it wholeheartedly.
This is another benefit of thorough testing and perfecting your product, it gives 100% confidence in it when talking to people, and that can't be faked. It will definitely help you to build trust with your customer, and more often than not, result in a sale.
So now you are out there selling, what next?
Well if you are a born worrier like me, eventually, you will be thinking about how to pay tax or whether you need to, you will be thinking about logging your incomings and outgoings, you will be worrying about stock management and production.
You will perhaps worry about the implications of running your own business from home, and while working full time, and whether or not you need insurance.
I'm writing this guide so that you don't need to worry. So let's go through some of the steps you should take to protect yourself and your business and to ensure that everything is done properly from the outset.
I would say that worrying a little is probably a good sign, it means that you can see the potential and don't want to mess it up, so give yourself a pat on the back, and lets get it all sorted so that you can just focus on building and growing your business!
You don't have to barrel towards your end goal at 100mph, slow down and have a breather while you figure out the finer points. You are now hopefully at the stage where you have confidence in your product and you just want to make things a little more disciplined and formalized.
So let's get into the nitty gritty of running your own business now then.
Accounting
Depending on your business structure, Sole Trader, Ltd company or LLP. (Read our full guide Here) If you want to spend the minimum amount of time managing the finances of your business, then keep your business money and your personal money separate from day one. Open a separate bank account immediately. Put all business earnings in there. Pay for materials out of it. Keep it completely separate from your food shopping or petrol money.
Some banks will let you use a personal account if you are a Sole Trader, but for Limited companies, a dedicated business bank account is a legal requirement. Luckily, they are relatively inexpensive and quick to set up.
At first I used to use a spreadsheet for this with simple incomings and outgoings in, but I found it quite cumbersome at month end, manually inputting every sale, opening old emails on my pc to try and track all the invoices I paid and sent.
I highly recommend using XERO accounting software to track everything, and setting up a separate bank account to track every transaction. They are currently running an offer of 80% off for your first 6 months which means you can have a fully Making Tax Digital ready software, running your accounts from as little as £3.20 a month Excluding vat.
I promise you it's worth it. 6 months of accounting takes 10 minutes instead of 2 days, once you link it to your bank account. They are currently offering you your first month for free too (as of 25th May 2026)
If you trade from a market stall or shop, as I did, I also recommend the Zettle point of sale card reader, it connects directly to your bank account also and provides monthly reports on your sales progress, well worth the small investment of £29.00 for the machine and a small transaction fee from every sale.
With these 2 pieces of software your accounting will take care of itself, and you are free to concentrate on buying stock and making and selling your products.
Your Safety Net: The £1,000 Trading Allowance
So you've made your first sale, what next?
In the UK, you can earn up to £1,000 in a tax year from a side hustle before you even need to tell HMRC. This is your ultimate safety net. You can make your first sales completely legally without filling out a single tax form. To stay up to date with the latest requirements on Self Asessment visit the HMRC's own website.
Registering with HMRC
You don't need to do this the second you make a sale. If you go over £1,000, you register as a Sole Trader. The deadline isn't immediate—you have until October 5th in your business's second tax year. It takes 10 minutes online, costs nothing, and makes you a legitimate trader.
Marketing and Websites
Stop trying to master SEO, Instagram Reels, and website design in week one! You can do all of this later. Get out and talk to people, show them how passionate you are about your idea let them see your product, you will make far more sales doing this than sitting in your bedroom.
When you're ready for a website, keep it simple: what you do, how much it costs, how to contact you. That's a thousand times better than an expensive, complicated e-commerce site you don't know how to maintain.
Set up some basic social media profiles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, wherever your customer lives. Direct your real life customers to your online sites and build a following of people, who are genuinely interested in your product or services, you will get far more engagement than inviting your friends and family who aren't always your ideal customer.
Final Thoughts
You don't need a business degree, or to be an Accountant, a Web designer, or a Marketing Wizard to start your own business, you just need to be passionate about your product, listen to feedback, develop your skills and expertise through self development and get out there and start doing!
Every successful business you see started from nothing, and every successful business owner had the same doubts and fears you are having right now. You will be surprised at what you are capable of sometimes, just enjoy the journey, it's one of the most fulfilling things you will ever do.
Don't be scared to mess up and fail, if you do, you can take what you have learned and moved onto your next idea with all of that new knowledge and experience to back you up.
Now lets get cracking eh?
